J-Walk

about

The song J-Walk entails the difficulties learning to drive in the city in comparison to a rural town. Marlee was casually driving to band rehearsal and caught herself cursing at pedestrians who dared to illegally cross the road in front of her. Her passenger then drew to her attention that she walks through red lights when she is a pedestrian herself. This caused Marlee to pose the philosophical question to herself ‘does the severity of a crime differ between circumstances?’. Why is it socially acceptable to jaywalk as opposed to running a red light? J-Walk then becomes a metaphor for the irony of different rules being bendable in only specific circumstances, with the title itself being spelt differently for emphasis; a grammatical error that would be frowned upon in an essay, yet is socially acceptable in the circumstances of a song title.
